Other cities in the region that have been added to UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network include Manizales, Colombia (Gastronomy), Masaya, Nicaragua (Crafts and Folk Art), San Javier de Loncomilla, Chile (Gastronomy), San Luis Potosí, Mexico (Literature), São Paulo, Brazil (Film), and Sarchí, Costa Rica (Crafts and Folk Art)

The Rise of the Family Sabbatical

More families are pressing pause on routine and taking time out to travel together, swapping daily schedules for shared adventure and unhurried discovery. The family sabbatical is fast becoming a defining travel trend for those seeking deeper connection and lasting memories.

In 2025, discerning travellers looked beyond the familiar, uncovering the quieter corners of Central America that rival Costa Rica for natural beauty and cultural depth. New luxury openings across Panama drew travellers to the black-sand beaches of Cambutal, the marine-rich waters of the Coiba Archipelago, and the serene volcano-crater village of Valle de Antón.

LiNGER Travel continues to curate unpretentious, tailor-made sabbaticals and experiential holidays that connect travellers to the region’s authentic spirit.

A 29-day Panama bespoke trip from £9984 per person, and 15-day El Salvador bespoke holiday from £2993 per person, based on 2 sharing, excl international flights, with LiNGER Travel

Steve Wilson, Founder of LiNGER Travel, specialists in designing extended, tailor-made journeys, shares how to make it truly transformational:“Be realistic about what’s possible. Build in contrast — a balance of rustic charm and indulgent luxury — and plan well ahead. With a trusted sabbatical designer, the preparation becomes part of the journey.”

As one family reflects, “Thank goodness you convinced us to do it. It’s impossible to summarise what this trip did for us — time and space to see the best bits in our children, and for them to see ours too.”

The project is powered entirely by renewable energy generated in Uruguay, a country internationally recognised for producing nearly 100% of its electricity from wind and solar sources. Operating with zero emissions, the new ferry will set a new standard for clean maritime transport in the region. Named in honour of the beloved Uruguayan actress China Zorrilla – a cultural icon of theatre and cinema across both shores – this pioneering initiative embodies innovation, environmental responsibility and regional connection. Ecuador

In the heart of Ecuador’s Yasuní National Park, guides from the Kichwa Añangu Community recently discovered a harpy eagle nest with a chick, a rare and hopeful sign for one of the Amazon’s most powerful yet threatened raptors.

In tribute to this remarkable event, Napo Wildlife Centre inaugurated the Harpy Tower last month as an observation platform that allows visitors to respectfully experience the surrounding forest where this iconic species thrives.

The new tower reflects Napo Wildlife Centre’s long-standing mission: to protect wildlife through community-led ecotourism. Rising above the rainforest canopy, it connects travellers not only with the natural wonders of Yasuní, but also with a living story of conservation, resilience, and coexistence.

Casa Andina: responsible tourism that promotes sustainable development in Peru

Casa Andina reaffirms its commitment to responsible tourism through hotel management that integrates sustainability into every aspect of its operations. With a presence across more than 30 regions of Peru, the chain has managed to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions per occupied night by 22% and decrease its electricity and water consumption by more than 20%, thanks to the implementation of efficient technologies, solar energy, and the use of natural gas in several of its hotels. In addition, 100% of its establishments collect used cooking oil for biodiesel, while 93% actively participate in recycling programs and 81% have eliminated small amenity bottles, moving steadily towards the goal of eliminating single-use plastics by 2030.

Beyond environmental issues, Casa Andina promotes a model of tourism that benefits local communities and promotes equity. Ninety-four percent of its staff comes from the regions where its hotels operate, and the company maintains a strong focus on diversity and inclusion, with a 15% increase in female participation over the last year. In addition, it promotes the overall health of its employees, provides sales spaces for local artisans and producers, and prioritizes purchases from small and medium-sized Peruvian companies. New river cruiser: Amazon Explorer from andBeyond

In September 2026, andBeyond will launch the Amazon Explorer, a new luxury expedition yacht designed to provide low-impact access to remote waterways. Guests will navigate hidden channels, observe wildlife and engage with community-led conservation projects, including river turtle protection and cultural experiences guided by Indigenous communities. This approach allows travellers to witness the forest intimately while supporting both its ecosystems and the people who sustain them. The Peruvian Amazon is one of the most biodiverse and ecologically vital forests on Earth. Its vast rivers and flooded forests regulate rainfall, store carbon and sustain thousands of species found nowhere else. Indigenous communities maintain deep ecological knowledge and cultural traditions that are central to the forest’s stewardship.

How Andean is shaping Southern Peru as 2026’s standout journey

Peru is set to be one of 2026’s most compelling destinations, driven by a shift towards journeys that prioritise space, silence and immersion in landscapes shaped by deep cultural heritage. As travellers look beyond the classic Machu Picchu route, southern Peru is emerging as a new frontier – a region defined by highland plains, ancient agricultural terraces, volcanic backdrops and secluded valleys that feel remarkably untouched.

Responding to this growing appetite for slower, more meaningful exploration, Andean, a family-owned brand offering a hand-crafted collection of soulful properties across Peru, has recently expanded its portfolio with Tinajani, a remote retreat set within a canyon of towering red-rock formations in the Andean highlands.

Tinajani itself brings a different rhythm to travel in the region, with its tented suites sitting quietly among the rocks, complete with private terraces and open-air hot tubs, all powered by solar energy. Days revolve around guided hikes, hidden corners of the canyon, astronomical storytelling and meals influenced by traditional Andean recipes. For 2026, the combination of Tinajani’s opening and the Southern Peru Travesía positions Peru at the forefront of a broader trend – journeys defined by landscape, authenticity and a renewed desire to understand the Andes beyond its most photographed icons.
