COMING UP: LATA Sustainability Webinar: Driving Nature Conservation Through Tourism

Tuesday 27th May at 16:00UK

Tourism has the potential to be one of the most powerful tools for conservation, but only when it goes beyond policy and theory to deliver real, measurable impact. This webinar brings together visionary leaders and practitioners from across Latin America to explore how tourism can protect landscapes, empower communities, and drive long-term, sustainable change.

Speakers:

Julian Guerrero – An expert in regenerative nature tourism and former Vice-Minister of Tourism for Colombia. Julian will share insights from his groundbreaking work on Colombia’s national sustainability policy and the USAID-funded Destination Nature project, which has pioneered nature tourism in regions recovering from armed conflict. He will highlight the critical role of destination-level policy, the economic power of tour operators in creating demand, and fresh data linking tourism to conservation outcomes.

Carolina Saenz Bolaños – An academic closely connected with Boena Hotels in Costa Rica. Carolina will discuss the importance of empowering local communities through guide training, education, and data sharing – demonstrating how these efforts drive conservation while uplifting local economies.

Mario Haberfeld – CEO and Founder of Onçafari, a pioneering conservation initiative in the Pantanal, Brazil. Learn how Onçafari has transformed local attitudes toward biodiversity through ecotourism, scientific research, and cultural preservation, including the reintroduction of jaguars and the conservation of the Pantanal’s unique habitats.

Tony Thorne – Owner of Wilderness Explorers in Guyana. Tony will share powerful stories, including the protection of the red siskin, harpy eagle nest conservation, and the arapaima fish recovery project. Discover how nature tourism can provide direct economic benefits to local communities, reduce the appeal of extractive industries, and preserve cultural heritage.

Key Topics:

  • Real-world examples of how tourism can become a powerful tool for conservation
  • The critical role of guides, local communities, and data in achieving conservation goals
  • The public responsibility of the private sector and the importance of legal frameworks
  • How nature tourism can transform local economies and create powerful conservation incentives
