Ecuador Adds Two New UNESCO Global Geoparks

Now with three in total, Ecuador leads South America in geoparks relative to its territory size. Ecuador takes a significant step in its commitment to sustainable tourism and territorial development with the recent designation of two new UNESCO Global Geoparks:

  • Napo Sumaco, in the Amazon basin, and
  • Tungurahua Volcano, in the central Andes.

These join the already established Imbabura Geopark, bringing the country’s total to three globally recognized geoparks.

🔹 Napo Sumaco holds over 170 million years of geological history. Its exceptional biodiversity is safeguarded by Indigenous Kichwa communities who blend ancestral knowledge with environmental conservation.

🔹 Tungurahua Volcano offers a dramatic Andean landscape shaped by volcanic and glacial activity. Local communities have transformed volcanic adversity into resilience through community-based tourism and the preservation of their living cultural heritage.

🔹 Imbabura, Ecuador’s first geopark, remains a regional model for geotourism with social impact, environmental education, and cultural promotion.

With this new recognition, Ecuador becomes the country with the highest number of geoparks per square kilometre in South America. These territories not only protect natural heritage but also activate local economies, inspire rural innovation, and strengthen cultural identity. UNESCO emphasizes the strategic role of geoparks as drivers of sustainable transformation. They are spaces where science, tradition, and tourism intersect to generate value and opportunity. Ecuador’s new geoparks support the global shift toward more meaningful, conscious, and place-based travel.

PANAMA

Panama will once again offer health insurance for tourists, after the Panama Tourism Authority (ATP) opened a public tender. “We will once again offer insurance so that every foreign citizen or Panamanian residing abroad can receive hospitalization and medical care. This will provide added value so they can visit Panama during their trip,” confirmed President José Raúl Mulino on Thursday May 15th during his weekly press conference.

Mulino stated that offering this insurance again will increase international tourist interest in Panama, generating benefits for the entire value chain surrounding this industry. “If more tourists come, more economic activity will be generated, at the level of bars, restaurants, taxis, Ubers, and everything that the tourism chain generates in terms of traffic,” he emphasized.

On May 9, the ´Panama Compra´ portal published a public act with a reference price of $3 million to facilitate an insurance policy covering personal accidents, hospitalization, or illness for foreigners or Panamanians residing abroad entering the country through Panama’s international airports.

Sumaq Machu Picchu: Arac Masin: new details added to the ritual that celebrates love and infuses it with an Andean essence

At Sumaq Machu Picchu Hotel, we’re committed to creating authentic experiences that connect our guests with the essence of Peruvian culture. That is why we continually renew our unique activities, adapting them with care and dedication to offer unforgettable moments.

One of our most emotional and meaningful experiences is the Andean Marriage or Arac Masin, a symbolic ceremony that honours love under the ancestral rituals of the Andes. Celebrated by an Andean shaman on the hotel’s private terrace, surrounded by nature and with a privileged view, this ceremony allows couples to symbolically unite in marriage, renew vows or commemorate their anniversary in an intimate atmosphere.

To further enrich this experience, we have incorporated new details that improve the ceremony: we now lend the bride a ceremonial bouquet and crown, as well as the natural floral decoration of the terrace. In addition, as an option, we provide the bride and groom with traditional Andean attire, so that they can fully integrate the symbolism and authenticity of Arac Masin.

The Andean wedding includes the ceremony by a shaman and an assistant, on a private terrace and a special toast for the bride and groom and their guests, creating an intimate, meaningful celebration deeply connected to Peruvian traditions.

This experience is part of Sumaq’s collection of exclusive cultural experiences designed to make our guests feel at home while discovering the essence of Peru through its history, customs and rituals.

Tourism as a Force for Good

At Say Hueque, we see tourism as a tool for positive change. As a certified B Corp and currently in the final stage of Travelife certification, we continue to invest in responsible travel. In August 2024, we celebrated a major milestone: planting 100,000 native trees in Patagonia through our Say Bosque project. This growing forest now holds over 127,000 trees, helping restore native ecosystems and offset traveller emissions. Our next ambitious goal: reach 500,000 trees planted by 2030. Our sustainability efforts also focus on reducing single-use plastics, promoting conscious travel practices, and working hand-in-hand with local partners to make every journey count for both people and planet.

Creating Real Impact in Local Communities

Say Hueque builds long-term relationships with local communities to promote grassroots tourism and inclusive travel. In Isla Maciel, just across from La Boca in Buenos Aires, we co-created a cultural centre with local residents, preserving the area’s heritage and enhancing tours led by local youth. We also work to promote their guided experiences. and support sustainable growth. In partnership with La Lechería de la Solidaridad, we help children from low-income neighbourhoods access educational travel. We fund an annual graduation trip to the seaside, organize farewell dinners, provide keepsakes, and coordinate donation drives and cultural outings year-round. These projects reflect our commitment to creating meaningful, lasting impact beyond tourism—empowering communities, celebrating identity, and offering access to enriching experiences.

“De Vuelta a Casa”

In a groundbreaking conservation initiative, Costa Rica has begun returning thousands of seashells to their native beaches using artificial intelligence. The “Back Home” project, led by Florida Ice and Farm Company (FIFCO), developed an AI tool capable of identifying a shell’s origin, Pacific or Caribbean, based on a single photo. With over 200 volunteers cataloguing 516 species, the tool enabled the return of 36,000 shells in 2024 alone, clearing years of airport confiscations. A new public web app now allows tourists to scan shells before taking them. The campaign, supported by Imperial Beer, also includes a documentary to raise awareness. The initiative aims to protect coastal ecosystems and shift public perception of seashells from souvenirs to vital natural assets.

Dome-style tents with real beds, chef-prepared meals, and daily happy hours elevate the stay, while hands-on conservation activities with local groups like Efecto Arena underscore the tour’s impact. This itinerary also features the iconic Mobula Ray migration, a true spectacle of nature. Fully customizable—with seamless extensions to award-winning Camp Cecil and Los Colibris Casitas—it’s a prime example of personalized, purpose-driven travel that uplifts local communities and ecosystems, while indulging the traveller in comfort and the art of slow, meaningful exploration.
