DESTINATION NEWS & TRENDS
EXPLORE WORLDWIDE: Record breaking year for South America bookings
Explore Worldwide, has reported a record-breaking year for South America trips, with several destinations showing significant growth year-on-year.
Reporting on its current financial year, running from 1 November 2024, revenue for its South American excursions is up 28% year-on-year, with Chile driving the trend with an impressive 115% boost compared to this time last year.
Trips to Colombia have also shown significant revenue growth at 87%, followed by Bolivia at 65% and Argentina at 51%.
Experts believe the spike is down to a number of key factors, including rising demand for immersive travel experiences, favourable exchange rates, and enhanced product offerings.
Michael Edwards, Managing Director of Explore Worldwide, said: “It’s been a fantastic year for South America. From Colombia to Patagonia, we’re seeing travellers increasingly seeking immersive, active and meaningful adventures, and South America delivers on all fronts. Ecuador being named Wanderlust’s Destination of the Year for 2025 has brought a lot of positive attention to the region.
“On top of that, the current exchange rate and political landscape have made North and Central America more expensive and potentially less appealing for British travellers, so naturally we’re seeing a definite shift in focus, with those who may have considered North America are now looking to Latin America instead. There’s a growing sense that this could be the start of a new era for Latin America – a region full of energy, diversity and potential.”
Explore’s new and upgraded itineraries have also been a key driving factor for the bookings spike, including an upgraded tour of Colombia, a shorter Peru highlights trip and an alternative Patagonia hiking tour in Chile, which ventures beyond the well-trodden W trek and includes a unique stay at a mountain refugio at the foot of the Cagliero glacier.
Michael added: “We’ve worked hard to evolve our product in the region and it’s brilliant to see that resonating with our customers and our travel trade partners alike. With momentum building, we’re looking forward to what the next chapter brings for South America.”

Hacienda Zuleta, Ecuador – Condor project, archaeology and a new bar
Hacienda Zuleta is building a new large aviary for its two pairs of breeding condors and a new condor interpretation centre, confirming Zuleta as a leader in condor rehabilitation and research. Known as Condor Huasi, this breeding and conservation centre, builds on the work started by the Galo Palaza Foundation in 2009. Part of the National Andean Condor Working Group, Condor Huasi’s aim is to boost the numbers of the endangered condor, the symbol of Ecuador. Another part of the project will see a purpose-built condor clinic, meaning injured birds arriving at Zulet’a rescue centre will receive a much higher level of medical care on site and reduce the stress involved in transporting them. Construction materials will be sourced from Zutela lands, making this a sustainable build. Fund raising is about to start for the condor clinic.
In partnership with Texas A&M University 15 archaeology students visited Zuleta in July to carry out investigations into the 14 Caranqui tolas and pyramids located on the Hacienda’s land. The Caranqui people were very numerous in the Ecuadorian Sierra, occupying the territory of what is now Ibarra, Otavalo and Cayambe, as far south as the Guayllabamba Valley during the late period, from 1250 AD, until the invasion of the Incas.
It’s orders at the bar time at Hacienda Zuleta. This welcoming manor house turned hotel in the heart of Ecuador’s Andes region now has its own bar for relaxing, socialising and raising a glass with new friends.

Peñico: the new jewel of the Supe Valley
In the majestic Supe Valley, cradle of the oldest civilisation in America, stands Peñico, an urban and ceremonial centre that flourished more than 3,500 years ago. Its temples, circular plazas, and dwellings reveal the grandeur of a society that knew how to honour nature and forge links between the coast and the mountains. The archaeological remains show polychrome ceramics, offerings, and walls that tell stories of trade, rituals, and spirituality. Every corner of Peñico invites you to imagine what life was like for those who lived there and to discover the cultural richness of the Norte Chico region.
Getting there is easy: from Lima, take the Panamericana Norte highway to km 184, then follow the Caral–Ámbar road for 34 km. In just 4 hours, travellers are immersed in a landscape where the past comes to life. Open every day from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Peñico awaits with open doors for history to speak again. Sustainability Updates
In 2026, LimaTours will intensify its commitment to sustainability in Peru with targeted initiatives that empower local communities. These actions will encompass reforestation programs and foundational education projects for diverse groups, in close partnership with the State and independent organizations. Additionally, the company will collaborate with a specialized institution to drive entrepreneurial growth in its operational regions, encouraging the creation of products that reflect its value proposition. These collective efforts will deliver sustainable economic opportunities for local communities while enhancing Peru’s stature as a premier tourism destination. By November 2026, these initiatives will include, for example, planting at least 4,000 trees in the Vilcanota Basin, involving 50 participants in the Patacancha education project, and cultivating 10 thriving entrepreneurs. Through these endeavours, LimaTours will reaffirm its unwavering adherence to responsible tourism, which safeguards cultural heritage and advances the nation’s sustainable development.
