The “China Zorrilla”, the world’s largest battery-electric ferry, has entered commercial service between Buenos Aires and Colonia del Sacramento. The vessel accommodates up to 2,100 passengers and 225 vehicles, operating entirely on electric propulsion without fossil fuels or local emissions.
According to Uruguay’s port authority, the project could reduce the journey’s overall carbon footprint by approximately 84%. Its quieter, low-vibration crossing also offers enhanced passenger comfort.
This new service provides European travellers with a more sustainable and memorable gateway into Uruguay, particularly for combined Argentina–Uruguay programmes. BUEMES DMC can integrate the crossing with privately guided stays in UNESCO-listed Colonia, Carmelo’s wineries and longer itineraries continuing to Montevideo and the Atlantic coast.
