As El Niño conditions develop in the region, recent rainfall has prompted precautionary measures in parts of Ecuador, Peru and Chile. Impacts vary considerably by location, making local information essential when assessing travel conditions.
Chile: Storm systems have brought heavy rainfall to central Chile, including the Santiago Metropolitan Region, where authorities issued precautionary alerts in areas vulnerable to landslides and debris flows. Most destinations included in Tropic’s itineraries continue operating normally.
Peru: Recent rainfall has affected Piura and Tumbes, with localised flooding and temporary disruptions. SENAMHI anticipates further precipitation along the northern coast, while Tropic’s operations in the country’s principal tourism regions continue as planned.
Ecuador: Unusually heavy rainfall has affected Guayaquil and other coastal areas. Authorities continue monitoring El Niño and maintaining preparedness measures, with impacts varying between destinations.
Tropic’s teams remain in contact with local authorities, hotels, field staff and Guardians, using first-hand information to assess conditions and make any necessary operational adjustments, with traveller wellbeing as the priority.
