The fire mainly affected the totora reed beds in the Uros Chulluni and Chimú sectors, near the Uros floating islands and the Titicaca National Reserve. It began on 20 October, with a reactivation reported on the afternoon of 21 October.
According to official government updates, the fire was brought under control, and Peru’s National Emergency Operations Centre (COEN-INDECI) later reported it extinguished at approximately 20:50 on 21 October. Response teams remain on watch for any residual hotspots.
The preliminary affected area is approximately 200 hectares of natural vegetation, mainly reed beds. According to available reports, there have been no injuries and no damage to homes.
Response:
Firefighting efforts involved the Provincial Municipality of Puno, the Peruvian Navy (with its lake patrol vessel and firefighting equipment), the fire brigade and SERNANP park ranger brigades, alongside other agencies that continue to monitor the situation.
Impact on tourism:
There has been no announcement of any closure of the Uros islands, nor any general suspension of tourism activities on Lake Titicaca. Our local team in Puno confirms that the fire is under control and that there have been no further incidents.
The situation remains under monitoring, and we will share further updates should conditions change or authorities publish additional information. Partners with clients currently travelling or due to visit the area are welcome to contact us for the latest information.
