Ananay Hotels is sponsoring an archaeological project exploring Hatun Vilcabamba, identified by research as the Incas’ final refuge. In July, its Marketing Director, Humberto Medrano, formed part of an expedition led by historian and explorer Santiago del Valle Chousa. The route continued beyond Vilcabamba in Cusco, the Spanish-founded settlement, into remote territory considered “tumultuous”, before emerging along the Apurímac River in Ayacucho. The investigation re-examines a geographical confusion made by Hiram Bingham, credited with the scientific discovery of Machu Picchu, which diverted his search for the last Inca capital. LiDAR surveys have revealed important structures beneath the vegetation, now awaiting archaeological investigation. /caption: Members of the Hatun Vilcabamba expedition crossing the Pampaconas River deep in the remote Vilcabamba region, 454 years after the fall of the last independent Inca
