As 2016 draws to a close, the Latin American Travel Association (LATA) rounds up the latest travel developments in the region.


Chimu Adventures launches new sail and ski expedition to Antarctica  

Chimu Adventures has launched a new exclusive 28 day sail and ski expedition offering thrill-seekers and skilled skiers the opportunity of experiencing the dazzling landscapes and incredible wildlife of Antarctica from a purpose built yacht as well as getting onto the slopes. Highlights of the tour include sailing down the mountain lined Beagle Channel, skiing on the volcanic Deception Island, sea kayaking amongst ice and penguins, climbing Mount Scott and ending with a stay on South America’s most southerly city, Ushuaia. The trip is priced from £20,495 per person.  


KE Adventures introduces a brand new “Best of Chile” tour

KE Adventures has introduced a new 13 day cultural walking holiday in Chile travelling from the Atacama Desert to San Pedro De Atacama in the spectacular Atacama Desert. Travellers will visit the spectacular El Tatio Geysers, the highest geyser field in the world before continuing to the futuristic site of the Valley of the Moon and ending with an unforgettable hike to the iconic granite rock centrepiece of Torres del Paine National Park. The holiday is priced from £4,145 including international flights.


Cox & Kings revamps its 2017 ‘Peru in Luxury’ tour

From 2017, luxury tour operator Cox & Kings will offer a newly revamped 11 day ‘Peru in Luxury’ holiday featuring some of Peru’s star attractions such as Machu Picchu, Lake Titicaca and Cusco whilst staying in some of the country’s most luxurious accommodation such as the Belmond Palacio Nazarenas in Cusco. The new tour will include direct flights with British Airways, an overnight ride on Latin America’s first ever sleeper train, the Belmond Andean Explorer from Puno to Cusco and a stay in luxury Titilaka, a secluded lodge on a private peninsula in Lake Titcaca. The holiday is priced from £2,995 per person including international flights.


Andean Trails offers new Colombia tour for 2017

New for 2017, Andean Trails is offering a new Colombia’s Caribbean Coast and Beaches holiday in Providencia, one of Colombia’s mountainous Caribbean Islands located off the east coast of Central America. The eight day tour includes visits to the stunning coves and peaceful beaches of the island, hiking to the top of a volcanic peak and enjoying traditional dancing and snorkelling amongst rays, sharks and sting rays. Prices of the holiday are available upon request.


EcoCircuitos Panama unveils a women’s only adventure holiday

Panamanian tour operator EcoCircuitos has designed an exclusive nine day programme for adventurous women located in the stunning Chiriqui Highlands and staying in a lodge in the middle of a private cloud forest reserve of Mount Totumas. Visitors will be offered the opportunity of taking part in a number of exciting outdoor activities such as kayaking down the Panama Canal to spot wildlife, zip lining, visiting a coffee farm and ending with a whale watching tour. The holiday is priced from £1,491 per person, excluding international flights.


New Costa Rica holiday with Geodyssey

In 2017, Geodyssey will offer a new one day extension as part of the “Costa Rica Chill Out holiday” in the luscious region of Naranjo, known for producing the best coffee in the country. The holiday will include a visit to a coffee mill and small coffee plantation owned by a former agronomist who is known locally as the ‘Hydrangea King’ and is a plant specialist. Visitors will learn how the coffee plantation is run and enjoy panoramic views over the countryside with a delicious cup of freshly brewed coffee. The holiday is priced from £2,645 per person excluding international flights.


Aqua Expeditions introduces women only journeys for 2017

In 2017, luxury boutique river cruise company Aqua Expeditions will launch an exclusive women-only journey on the Peruvian Amazon. The four day cruise will depart from Iquitos to the Pacaya Samirira National Reserve to fish for piranhas, spot the famous pink river dolphins and capuchins monkeys before heading to an indigenous village on the river bank to learn about the cultures and traditions of the native people of the Amazonia. Other highlights of the holiday will include trekking in the Amazonian jungle, exploring the Yanayacu Islands also known as the “Islands of the Iguana” and visiting a traditional market to taste local delicacies. Prices of the cruise are available upon request and will depart on 20 March 2017.



Chable Resort opens in the Yucatan in Mexico

Luxury wellness hotel Chable is the newest resort to open on the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico located 25 minutes from the historic city of Merida. Chable offers guests the choice of staying in one of 28 stunning ‘casitas’ (little cabins) situated within lush green gardens and featuring stunning views of the surrounding rainforest. The retreat also includes a large outdoor pool and dining area, perfect for unwinding with a drink, private gardens and a jacuzzi. One night stay in a casita is priced from £1,055 per person.


Hacienda Alta Gracia opens sustainable farm

Luxury resort Hacienda Alta Gracia located in the Perez Mountains in Costa Rica has launched a new concept with the introduction of “La Huerta”, its very own sustainable farm. The farm has been cultivated with local fruit, herbs, produce and will be used to supply the meals provided by the resort’s restaurant called Ambar. Every morning, guests will be encouraged to accompany chefs to the farm to pick their own products which will then be used for the days’ meals.


Alvear Palace Hotel opens new rooftop areas in Buenos Aires

Luxury four star hotel, the Alvear Palace Hotel in Buenos Aires is opening a new rooftop area boasting extraordinary views of Rio de la Plata, nearby parks and squares, as well as an exclusive lounge, heated pool and bar. The new rooftop is an ideal location for guests to relax with a drink admiring the panoramic views of the bustling city. One night stay in the hotel is priced from £519 based on two people sharing a standard double room.



Air Europa expands flight routes to Latin America

Air Europa has launched a brand new four time weekly flight from London Gatwick (via Madrid) to Cordoba, Argentina’s second biggest city. Byron Shirto, Chairman of LATA says “The new service will open up a host of opportunities for tourism to this region”. Max Campos, Senior Sales Manager at the airline says “We are excited to add Cordoba to our long haul network and our second in Argentina after Buenos Aires. There is a big opportunity for UK & European customers to discover one of the best kept secrets of Argentina”.

Air Europa will continue the expansion of its routes in April 2017 with the launch of the first ever flight from Madrid to San Pedro Sula in Honduras which will operate once a week. Return flights are priced from £298 from London via Madrid.



Landmark attraction re-opens on St Helena

Plantation House, one of St Helena’s landmark historical attractions and home to Jonathan the tortoise, has been re-opened to the public for behind the scenes tours. The house was built in 1792 as a country estate for the Governor of the East India Company, and is known as the home of the St Helena Governor. House tours take place on Tuesdays and are available for a minimum of three to 12 people. Bookings can be made via the Tourist Office and are priced at £10 per person.
