Every August, Colombia’s second largest city of Medellin plays host to one of the world’s largest flower festivals, La Feria de los Flores. Visitors descend upon the city to witness the week-long event, coming from as far afield as the US, Europe and even Australia.

So why are flowers so important to the area? Colombia is a huge exporter of flowers, beaten only by the Dutch. Medellin is known as the ‘City of Eternal Spring’ due to its mild climate. It lies in the heart of the flower growing region, so it’s no surprise that here they celebrate flora.

The colourful festival begins with a huge firework display, followed by plenty of activities. As well as a strong emphasis of flowers, there are a variety cultural events that show the city off at its best. Concerts, parades, children’s events, presentations, dance performances and theatre are part of the schedule. As the event grows, so does the range of events, from exotic flower shows to classic car parades.Don’t miss the Desfile de Silletros, when local flower cultivators parade through the streets. Their intricate displays seem to get more impressive each year. Still the highlight, as local flower growers show off their wares to the world. Make sure you get there early to ensure you’ve got yourself a decent spot. Latecomers may be able to buy tickets for the raised seating areas, but they get snapped-up as well.

The festival began in 1957, when a local official, came up with the idea to celebrate the flourishing flower industry and bring in much needed tourism. The festival was a success, and grew to the huge festival it is today.

Medellin has had a rocky history of violence and turmoil from which it is finally emerging. Once home to the infamous drug lord Pablo Escobar; Medellin has completely transformed in the last 20 years. After modernisation of the city’s infrastructure, the city has developed a cultural buzz. Now there are budding community organizations, youth groups and empowered citizens. The Feria de los Flores is an expression of that new freedom and the city’s finest cultural event.
